PARTNERS
AIDOS in partnership with Forearms of Change Centre to Enable Community (FOCCEC)
BACKGROUND
Jordan ratified and approved several national policies and international conventions related to GBV to ensure women’s rights, protect GBV survivors, and involve women in processes related to prevention and protection in conflicts and peace building. It ratified the Convention on Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), except Art.16, which is incompatible with Sharia law, as it states that spouses have the same rights and responsibilities during marriage and at its dissolution. Indeed, under Jordanian law, marriage is not based on equality, but rather on reciprocity: spouses and husbands have different rights and duties, for every right of a partner there is a corresponding duty for the other partner.
