ITALY – GLOBAL HEALTH 4 ALL: Ensure Italy’s long-term support for the Global Fund

2020-2023   Rights and Global Health

The project is the follow-up to two previous initiatives: Strengthen Italy’s commitment to support the Global Fund against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (2015-2017) and “Ensuring Italy’s long-term support to the Global Fund and Global Health” (2018-2020).

WHERE
Italy

PARTNERS
The initiative is carried out in synergy with projects that other civil society organizations (CSOs) of the Global Fund Advocates Network (Gfan) are carrying out in their countries. In Italy, the project is coordinated by Aidos on behalf of the Global Health Italian Network, composed of 11 CSOs committed to protecting and promoting the right to health for all.

BACKGROUND
In 2020, the Covid -19 pandemic spread all over the world with very severe consequences, also due to the so-called secondary impacts on other health emergencies. According to the Global Fund, decades of progress against HIV, TB and malaria are being derailed as a knock-on effect of the pandemic. The volume of HIV testing has dropped by 50% in some places where the Global Fund invests, such as Burkina Faso and other countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. New TB case notifications have dropped by up to 75%, and this could lead to an increase in new infections. Covid-19 negatively impacted the launch of mosquito nets distribution campaigns, delaying them and leaving people vulnerable to malaria, most of them children, because unprotected.

GOALS
The project aims to ensure that Italy:

  • re-confirms Official Development Assistance (ODA) for health as a priority area for the government
  • maintains, possibly increases, its support to the Global Fund in the new context of Covid-19 pandemic.

MAIN ACTIVITIES
The above-mentioned goals will be achieved by:
 – developing new synergies of the Global Health Italian Network with other networks / coalitions          both in Italy and abroad
– developing and implementing a strategy based on advocacy, policy and communication activities
– participating in the Civil 20, one of the G20 Engagement Groups during the G20 Italian Presidency in 2021.
