G7 Italy 2024: Making Global Health a Priority
THE SITUATION
AIDOS and the Italian Network for Global Health follow the G7 and G20 processes by participating in the work of the international civil society gathered within the Civil7 (C7) and Civil20 (C20), the official engagement groups of these processes.
On the occasion of Italy’s Presidency of the G7 in 2024, the Civil7 (C7) formalized its work through the creation of thematic working groups, including one dedicated to global health.
Although the right to health is recognized as a key priority, there is a risk that other equally pressing issues — such as climate change, humanitarian crises, and ongoing conflicts — may dominate the dialogue between institutions and civil society.
Thanks to the project, it will be possible to strengthen the activities of the C7 “Global Health” working group by providing secretariat services and support to the coordination team in drafting the health section of the C7 Communiqué, as well as documents to be prepared for specific institutional events, such as the G7 Health and Development Ministerials.
The entire G7 process concludes in December 2024, although the Summit of Heads of State and Government took place in June of the same year.
The project also supports the transition of the “Global Health” working group from the Italian C7 to the Canadian C7 for the following year.
OBJECTIVES
The project aims to contribute to ensuring that, within the framework of the 2024 G7 process under the Italian Presidency:
- health remains one of the priorities on the global agenda
- The Global Fund is recognized as an effective partner for global health in the G7 Communiqué and/or other official documents, such as the Health Ministerial Communiqué, one year ahead of its 8th replenishment process.
These objectives will be achieved through:
- Collaboration in the activities of the C7 “Global Health” working group, by providing secretariat functions and supporting coordination, including in the drafting of documents
- Participation in the media centres of the G7 Summit and the Health Ministerial, to promote the issue of the right to health
- L’organizzazione di attività di informazione e sensibilizzazione in momenti strategici nell’ambito del processo G7.
All these activities will involve representatives from civil society in the Global South, the Global Fund, and other international organizations.
The implementation of the activities will be carried out in synergy with the project Global Health is One Health: Italy’s Support to the Global Fund, optimizing efforts both in terms of advocacy and communication.
