Now Me! Kenya: developing a gender-transformative communication strategy together

In mid-September, AIDOS staff carried out a second mission to Nairobi as part of the project Now Me! Nurturing Opportunities for Women in Kenya, which aims to strengthen the social and economic opportunities available to women and young mothers in vulnerable situations, with a particular focus on those who are living or have lived on the streets.

The mission brought together AIDOS and its partner organisations AMANI, Koinonia, and Storielibere, around a shared goal: to jointly design and develop the communication campaign that will accompany the project’s activities over the next two years. Over the course of three intensive days of meetings and workshops, participants exchanged ideas, priorities, and perspectives, engaging in a collaborative process to define key messages, objectives, and communication strategies. The discussions provided an opportunity to draw on complementary experiences and expertise, strengthening the project’s shared vision and the change it seeks to promote.

AIDOS’s expertise in the Gender Transformative Approach (GTA) played a central role throughout the process. On the one hand, it informed a training session for partner organizations aimed at translating the GTA into concrete communication practices, helping participants identify the key questions to ask and the stakeholders to engage. On the other hand, it ensured that a gender perspective consistently guided the work and discussions throughout the meetings, fostering critical reflection and awareness of social norms, gender stereotypes, and power dynamics.

The mission marked a crucial first step in the co-creation of the campaign, while also providing a space for dialogue and collaboration to develop tools and content capable of amplifying the voices of the women involved in the project, showcasing the work of the partner organizations, and effectively engaging the campaign’s diverse target audiences. It also strengthened the network among the participating organizations, reaffirming the importance of a shared approach not only to the design and implementation of activities, but also to their internal and external communication.
