Gender transformative approach
The gender transformative approach actively examines, questions and changes the rigid gender norms and power imbalances that favour boys and men over girls and women.
The theme
Gender-based violence, in all its manifestations, is the symptom and result of deeply rooted gender inequalities and restrictive gender norms. Addressing them therefore requires a Gender Transformative Approach (GTA), which deconstructs harmful gender roles, norms and power relations.
As defined by UNICEF, UNFPA and UN Women, the gender transformative approach actively examines, challenges and changes the rigid gender norms and power imbalances that favour boys and men over girls and women. It aspires to address the root causes of gender inequality and reshape unequal power relations; it goes beyond the individual empowerment of girls and women, aiming to rebalance those dynamics and power structures that are instrumental in perpetuating and reinforcing gender inequalities. A gender transformative approach thus seeks to promote gender equality through:
- The critical examination of inequalities and gender roles, norms and dynamics.
- Recognising and strengthening positive norms that support equality and an environment conducive to change.
- Promoting the position of women, girls and marginalised groups in society and transforming the underlying social structures, policies and widespread social norms that perpetuate and legitimise gender inequalities.
What Aidos does
In its work supported by the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme for the Elimination of FGM, Aidos implements projects aimed at the elimination of FGM through gender transformative approaches.
