Gender stereotypes
Gender stereotypes are preconceived ideas that attribute certain socially and culturally determined characteristics and roles to people on the basis of gender.
The theme
Gender stereotypes are deep-rooted generalisations on the basis of which characteristics and roles are ascribed based on presumed gender. In this way, the characteristics of an entire social category are attributed to people. They are generalisations, which often confine people to static and constricting models. They are widespread and constantly reinforced by different spheres of society: peers, family, media, school, work, etc. They are not “natural”, but cultural constructs that change according to context and over time.
Gender stereotypes can limit the development of people’s talents and abilities, as well as their experiences in education and employment and, in general, their opportunities in life. The consequences for those who do not conform can be very serious, such as discrimination, social exclusion and gender-based violence.
Gender-based beliefs and expectations usually place women at a disadvantage in terms of the substantive enjoyment of rights such as the freedom to act and to be recognised as adults, autonomous and capable of fully participating in economic, social and political development, and of making decisions on their own lives; they also intersect with other forms of discrimination.
What Aidos does
An education free of stereotypes allows people to realise their potential and to imagine themselves according to their desires, and it enables them to build a different imaginary that contributes to societal change.
Education is fundamental for the self-determination and empowerment of girls and women, which is why AIDOS focuses its activities both in Italy and abroad on the realisation of educational projects, aimed at combating stereotypes and preventing gender-based violence in its various forms.
