The project is the continuation of the previous one, which concluded in October 2023: ‘Global Health 4 All: Ensuring Italy’s Long-Term Support to the Global Fund’
Background
The COVID-19 pandemic, which swept across the globe between 2020 and 2023, affecting 229 countries in different ways, had significant repercussions on global health and on the status of health as a priority within international cooperation. This situation shifted institutional focus toward a new health architecture and new priorities, such as vaccine production and preparedness measures for future pandemics.
The outbreak of war in Ukraine in February 2022 further diverted the attention of Italian institutions, the media, and public opinion away from global health, toward other—albeit important—issues. At the institutional level, this resulted in a change in the priorities of international cooperation.
The implementation period of the project will coincide with Italy’s presidency of the G7 (2024), the European Parliament elections (2024), and the rollout of the Mattei Plan for Africa—a four-year initiative aimed at redefining the role of international cooperation with selected African countries, leveraging private sector engagement.
Objectives
The project aims to ensure that Italy:
- Reconfirms Official Development Assistance in the health sector as a priority
- Maintains the financial commitments made during the latest 2023–2025 Global Fund replenishment conference
- Continues to finance the Global Fund during the 8th replenishment conference, in line with the objectives of the Fund’s Investment Case.
These objectives will be achieved by:
- Developing new synergies between the Network and other networks/coalitions both in Italy and abroad
- Developing and implementing an integrated strategy based on advocacy, policy, and communication
- Participating in the Civil 7, one of the G7 engagement groups under the Italian presidency.
