BACKGROUND<\/span>
\n<\/strong>According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior,\u00a0between January and June 2017, 73,094 migrants,\u00a0mostly African,\u00a0reached the Italian coasts. This population is predominantly male and with a significant percentage of Nigerian women (almost 40%). In the migration process, women are particularly vulnerable to different forms of physical and psychological trauma (exposure to conflict, torture, rape or other forms of sexual and gender-based violence) , both in refugee camps and on their way to Europe. Reception systems, however, are not always coordinated to meet the needs of violence survivors.\u00a0 Professionals and officials of the reception system who take care of the survivors are inadequately trained,\u00a0often do not know\u00a0the\u00a0consequences of sexual\u00a0and gender-based\u00a0violence\u00a0(SGBV) and, regarding female genital mutilation (FGM), they may be frequently unaware of its existence and fail to detect this form of violence. Furthermore, sometimes they are not able to deal with problems \u00a0faced by migrants \/ asylum seekers \/ refugees (People of Concern – PoC) with a\u00a0holistic, integrated, gender and culturally sensitive approach,<\/strong>\u00a0while the recent European directives on asylum stress the importance of integrating a gender approach in the reception system and in the asylum procedures.<\/p>\n

GOALS<\/span>
\n<\/strong>General objective<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0: to contribute to the protection and support to SGBV survivors among refugees, migrants and asylum seekers (People of concern \u2013 PoC)
\nSpecific objective<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0: to promote access to the existing reception\/support services in Sicily for PoC who have undergone SGBV, \u00a0through:
\n– strengthening the capacity of reception systems\u2019 professionals<\/span> and operators (personnel in the psycho-social, health, legal, juridical, cultural mediation field) to take care of victims of SGBV, including FGM, with an integrated, intercultural\u00a0 and gender-sensitive approach
\n– facilitating the establishmentof an effective referral system<\/span>
\n– increasing migrants, asylum seekers and refugees\u2019 awareness<\/span> on health consequences of SGBV and available reception services in Catania and Palermo.<\/p>\n

AIDOS ACTIVITIES<\/span>
\n<\/strong>AIDOS will carry out:
\n1) training and awareness raising<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0activities<\/strong> for \u00a0reception systems\u2019 professionals on:
\nidentify cases<\/u> of\u00a0SGBV; assess the\u00a0specific\u00a0\u00a0needs<\/u>\u00a0of those who have experienced it; strengthen t<\/u>he multisectoral services network; <\/strong>improve the referral system<\/u>\u00a0\u00a0in Palermo and Catania.
\n2)\u00a0 Information activities <\/strong>through information materials addressed to:
\n– professionals\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>in contact with the PoC (\u00a0fact sheet<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0containing information on the basic principles to follow in the reception activity; an\u00a0 Operational and training tool\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0on SGBV)
\n– PoC<\/span> \u00a0(poster<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0including messages on SGBV, available services and how to access them;\u00a0\u00a0flyer<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in six languages<\/em> \u00a0mapping health, psychological and legal support services in Catania<\/a> and Palermo<\/a>).<\/p>\n

EXPECTED RESULTS<\/span>

\n<\/u>\u00a0– Awareness activities on SGBV for an improved knowledge on provision of care for PoC
\n– Establishment of a referral system in Catania and Palermo
