The CPD is the United Nations body responsible for assessing the implementation of the Programme of Action adopted at the International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo in 1994. This year, the Commission focused on the theme ‘Population, technology and research in the context of sustainable development,’ at a time when technological innovation and scientific research are profoundly transforming demographic trends, health systems, and the ways in which information and services related to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are accessed.

AIDOS took part in the process, in coordination with international civil society and in collaboration with Countdown 2030 Europe, closely following the work of the CPD to advocate for the importance of adequately addressing the risks related to technology — including the exacerbation of inequalities and gender-based violence facilitated and amplified by digital tools — while also aiming to harness its potential to promote and expand access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, and to advance gender justice.

The session took place in an increasingly complex and polarized global context, marked by the presence of numerous anti-rights governments and movements pushing to question or undermine long-standing global commitments and standards in the areas of human rights and gender equality. As a result, this year’s Commission was unable to adopt a final consensus document, despite many Member States reaffirming their commitment to implementing the International Conference on Population and Development and its Programme of Action.

In this context, as in that of the CSW, it is essential to uphold the commitments undertaken and to promote the full realization of sexual and reproductive health and rights, in order to guarantee the right to bodily autonomy and to access quality healthcare services without discrimination. Reaffirming these responsibilities within the multilateral system is also more urgent than ever, in light of the shrinking space for civil society action and the continuous cuts to funding for international cooperation.

Read the statement of Countdown 2030 Europe

From April 13 to 17, the 59th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) took place in New York.
