A deep-impacting approach is needed for a significant cultural change that leads to the end of entrenched social norms. Gender transformative approaches are the key to countering FGM. Bodily autonomy, self-determination and freedom from all manifestations of gender-based violence are fundamental conditions for the empowerment of women and girls, the full enjoyment of their rights and the achievement of equality.
