Empowerment<\/h1>\n\n\n

By empowerment we mean the development of women’s self-awareness, confidence and agency<\/em> over their own lives, including claiming the right to make autonomous decisions about their bodies, lives and futures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The concept of empowerment has been central to feminist theories and practices, although its meaning has changed significantly over time. The concept of empowerment from a feminist perspective encompasses both individual transformation and collective social change, recognising that personal liberation is inextricably linked to broader structural changes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we talk about empowerment, we mean, on an individual level, the development of women’s self-awareness, confidence and agency<\/em> over their own lives, including through the creation of concrete tools such as opportunities to generate income and thus achieve economic independence. This includes claiming the right to make autonomous decisions about one’s body, work, relationships and future. However, individual empowerment alone is insufficient without addressing systemic inequalities. The collective dimension of empowerment involves the work of deconstructing patriarchal structures and creating lasting social change, including through the transformation of institutions and norms (both legal and social) that perpetuate gender discrimination. The feminist principle that \u201cthe personal is political\u201d highlights how individual experiences of oppression connect to broader social patterns that require collective solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is crucial that empowerment is understood through an intersectional lens: women’s paths to empowerment vary significantly according to their racialisation, class, sexual orientation, disability status and other social variables. Universal approaches to empowerment that ignore these differences risk reinforcing existing privileges and marginalising certain groups of women. There is a growing recognition that empowerment must be defined and pursued by women themselves rather than imposed from outside, that it generates a constant negotiation of power relations, and that different women may define and pursue empowerment in different ways according to their contexts and priorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Access to financial resources and economic opportunities is crucial for women’s empowerment. Economic independence enables women to leave abusive situations, pursue education and exercise greater control over their lives. Aidos has carried out projects in contexts where it is particularly difficult for women to enter the labour market, due to cultural and social barriers that discourage them from taking an active part in the socio-economic growth process of their country, limiting their ability to create micro-enterprises and to become agents of development in their communities. For instance, through the implementation of business incubators, the role of women in economic development has been promoted, encouraging the creation of small and medium-sized enterprises that go far beyond traditional gender-based models. This model of intervention promotes female entrepreneurship by following an integrated approach in which economic rights are framed within the broader framework of promoting the role of women in their communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
