FGM is internationally recognised as a violation of women’s human rights and a form of gender-based violence. They are among the harmful practices rooted in gender inequalities, aimed at controlling women’s sexuality, their bodies and their sexual and reproductive rights. Globally, an estimated 200 million girls and women are currently living with some form of FGM. Although the practice is declining in most of the countries where it is prevalent, in most of these there is a high rate of population growth, which means that the number of girls subjected to FGM will continue to increase if actions to abandon the practice are not strengthened. This requires coordinated and systematic interventions, which must involve women, communities and focus on human rights and gender equality. The sexual and reproductive health needs of women and girls suffering the consequences must also be met.

FGM includes “all practices that result in the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other damage to the female genitalia performed for non-therapeutic reasons” (World Health Organisation). The practice can cause short-, medium- and long-term complications, including chronic pain, infections, increased risk of HIV transmission, anxiety and depression, birth complications, infertility and, in the worst cases, death. It is recognised as an extreme violation of the rights of women and girls. In 2012, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the first resolution against Female genital mutilation, calling for global efforts to eliminate the practice. On 7 February 2018, the European Parliament passed a Resolution on zero tolerance for Female genital mutilation. In 2015, FGM was included in the Sustainable Development Goals under Goal 5.3, which calls for the elimination of all harmful practices. Yet FGM remains widespread: according to UNICEF, in 31 countries with nationally representative data, more than 230 million girls and women are subjected to FGM. Due to population growth, it is predicted that this number could rise to 4.6 million girls in the year 2030 unless efforts to end FGM are intensified. It is estimated that there are 600,000 women and girls with FGM in Europe, while as far as Italy is concerned, the latest survey conducted during 2019 by the Bicocca University reveals the presence of 87,600 women with FGM as of 1 January 2018, of whom 7600 are minors.

In every society where FGM is practised, it is a deeply rooted manifestation of gender inequality.

What Aidos does

AIDOS has more than 40 years of experience and commitment in the fight against female genital mutilation, with projects aimed at helping to create a social environment that enables the empowerment of women and girls and their bodily autonomy, including sexual and reproductive freedom, by addressing power imbalances between genders.

AIDOS is among the founding associations of the European End FGM Network, composed of organisations based in 15 European countries working to end the practice The network is a European reference point, capable of joining the forces of communities and civil society organisations, creating synergies and cooperation with all stakeholders in Europe and worldwide.

Together with the End FGM Network and other associations, AIDOS created the free online e-learning platform End FGM E-Campus, which provides a high-quality, comprehensive, holistic and interdisciplinary training opportunity.
